Your First Salt Therapy Session: What to Wear, Expect & Know

Thinking about trying salt therapy for the first time? You’re not alone. A lot of Louisville residents are finding real relief through halotherapy — but walking into something unfamiliar can feel a little nerve-wracking. What should you wear? Will it feel weird? What actually happens in there?

This guide walks you through every step of your first session at Bodhi Salt Center, from pulling into the parking lot to that first deep breath of clean, salt-infused air.

Why your first visit feels different (and that’s okay)

Here’s the truth: sitting in a room filled with pharmaceutical-grade salt particles is not something most people have done before. It’s natural to have questions.

Dasha Grankina, our co-founder and a certified yoga instructor with over 16 years of teaching experience, hears this all the time from first-timers. She struggled with Louisville’s brutal ragweed season herself, tried local salt therapy options, and left disappointed. That frustration is exactly why Bodhi Salt Center exists — to create the kind of welcoming, high-quality halotherapy experience that Louisville was missing.

Every part of your first visit is designed to feel comfortable, calming, and pressure-free.

What to wear to your salt therapy session

This is the single most common question we get, and the answer is simple: comfortable, breathable clothing you don’t mind getting a little salty.

Think yoga class or a casual walk — loose pants, a t-shirt, athletic wear. You’ll be reclining in zero-gravity chairs for 45 minutes, so comfort matters more than anything. Cotton and breathable fabrics work best. Skip tight clothing, heavy perfumes or lotions (they can interfere with the therapy), and jewelry that might tarnish. You might notice a light salt residue on your clothes afterward — it brushes right off.

Bring a water bottle if you’d like, and arrive about 10-15 minutes early. Your first visit includes a quick health questionnaire and a chance to chat with our team about your wellness goals. Our St. Matthews location at 4802 Sherburn Lane has plenty of parking.

Inside the salt room

As you step into our adult salt room, the first thing you’ll notice is the warm glow from backlit Himalayan salt walls. The floor is covered with larger salt crystals — it feels a bit like walking on a salt beach. Zero-gravity recliners are arranged around the room, and the lighting is soft and low.

The halogenerator — the medical-grade device that makes halotherapy actually work — grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into microscopic particles (1-5 microns) and disperses them into the air. You might see a fine salt mist near the machine. This is what separates real halotherapy from just sitting in a room with salt blocks on the walls. Those tiny airborne particles travel deep into your respiratory system and produce actual results.

The temperature stays comfortable at around 68-72°F with low humidity. Soft music plays in the background. The scent is subtle and clean — slightly mineral, like fresh ocean air. No added fragrances.

What you’ll feel during the session

Within the first 10-15 minutes, most guests notice a shift into deep relaxation. You’ll likely feel a slight salty taste on your lips, maybe a tickle in your throat (that’s the salt working), and your nose might start running as your body clears congestion. Some people fall asleep — that’s a good sign your nervous system has shifted into rest mode.

Less common but also normal: a light skin tingle from natural exfoliation, temporary thirst, or light coughing as your lungs clear.

If anything feels truly uncomfortable — difficulty breathing, chest tightness, dizziness — there’s a call button in the room and our team is always right outside.

Can you bring your phone? Yes, but we’d encourage you to try 45 minutes without a screen. If you use it for a meditation app or calming music, that’s fine. Your choice.

If you’re worried about claustrophobia

Our adult salt room is spacious and open — high ceiling, well-lit, and you can see the door clearly from every seat. It’s not a small chamber or enclosed pod. You can leave anytime. There’s no lock, no pressure. Most guests with mild claustrophobia are surprised by how comfortable the space feels once they settle in.

If you’re nervous, sit closer to the door your first time.

After your session

When the 45 minutes are up, take your time getting out of the chair — you might feel deeply relaxed, almost like waking from a good nap. Brush off any salt residue, drink plenty of water (hydrating after is important), and avoid showering for about an hour if you can so the salt continues working on your skin.

Many first-timers sleep noticeably better that night. You might notice continued mucus clearance, reduced sinus pressure, or clearer skin over the next day or two. Brief fatigue is normal — that’s your body healing.

Curious how many sessions you’ll need? It depends on what you’re coming in for. We wrote a full guide to session frequency that breaks it down by condition.

Bringing your kids?

Bodhi Salt Center has a dedicated Kids’ Salt Room — not just the adult room with kids allowed in, but a separate space designed specifically for children. It’s playful, engaging, and supervised, with storytime, crafts, and STEM activities that make the session feel like play rather than treatment.

Kids don’t need to sit still. They breathe the same therapeutic-grade salt air while they play. Parents can join for free with certain memberships, or book their own session while the kids are in theirs.

A lot of Louisville parents have found this to be a game-changer for managing their children’s allergies and respiratory issues naturally.

Ready to experience it yourself?

Your first session is going to be simpler and more relaxing than you’re probably imagining. Wear comfortable clothes, show up a few minutes early, breathe deeply, and let the salt do its work.

Most guests leave breathing easier, feeling calmer, and wondering why they waited so long.

Book your first session today and see why over 127 families have given Bodhi Salt Center a five-star review. You can also pair salt therapy with our cedar barrel steam, contrast therapy, or Shirodhara for a deeper experience — our team will help you figure out what makes sense for you.
